The Power of the Pitch in Magic

If you’ve ever worked in sales or marketing (or watched a few too many episodes of Shark Tank) you know the power of a well-crafted pitch. It’s not just about asking for something; it’s about making a compelling case, clearly stating what you want, and showing why it matters. Turns out, the universe appreciates a strong pitch, too. In many magical traditions, especially in manifestation and petition work, we’re encouraged to state our will – to speak our desires aloud, write them down, or offer them up in ritual. But not all petitions are created equal. The more focused, intentional, and aligned your intention is, the more likely it is to generate momentum. So let’s borrow a little wisdom from business and apply it to the way we write and deliver petitions in our magical practice.
In business, an “elevator pitch” is a short, persuasive summary of what you’re offering and why it matters. It’s called an elevator pitch because… well, imagine you find yourself on an elevator with someone you want to impress. You’ve only got a few seconds – until they get off the elevator – to make them care, so it needs to be clear, confident, and specific. Your magical petition should do the same. It’s your brief, intentional request to the universe, your deities, your spirits, or your higher self. It’s not about groveling or begging, it’s about naming specifically what you want and aligning your energy with it.
Instead of saying “Please fix my life,” try something like “I call in a new job opportunity that aligns with my skills, supports my financial goals, and honors my time and values.” It’s specific and focused, and it leaves room for the universe to work… but it doesn’t leave anything important up to chance.
Sales professionals often build pitches using a few classic ingredients: the problem, the solution, and the value. You can use a similar format when crafting your magical pitch.
- What’s the need or desire? What are you trying to shift, attract, release, or improve?
- What do you want to happen instead? Frame it positively and clearly. What does success look like?
- Why does it matter? What’s the emotional or energetic significance behind this ask?
Here’s an example: “I release this pattern of self-doubt that keeps me small (the need). I invite the clarity and courage to speak up at work, knowing my voice and ideas are valuable (what you want to happen). I ask for alignment with opportunities that honor my leadership, so I can grow with confidence (why it’s important to you).”
See how that feels different than just “Help me be more confident”? You’re not asking anymore, you’re stating your needs and why they matter.
Delivery Matters: Presentation Is Part of the Magic
In sales, how you present your pitch – tone, timing, visuals – can make or break the deal. The same applies in spellwork. If you’re writing your petition as part of a ritual, take care with the details. Use paper or materials that feel sacred to you. Choose ink, herbs, or candles that match your intention. Speak your words aloud with steady breath and belief. Fold your petition and place it on your altar, in a spell jar, under a candle, or in your journal – whatever resonates the most for you.
Also, be sure you know your audience. Good salespeople tailor their pitch based on who they’re talking to. You can do the same in magical work. If you’re writing a petition to a specific deity, spirit, or ancestor, consider what kind of tone and request aligns with that relationship. Are you approaching a fierce warrior goddess, a nurturing ancestral matriarch, or the great unknown of the cosmos? Each might call for a slightly different style of request – formal, heartfelt, playful, poetic, direct. That doesn’t mean you have to get it “perfect.” It just means you’re building a relationship with the energies you’re calling in, and that starts with respect and intention.
Pitch with Purpose
Writing petitions isn’t about convincing the universe to care. It already does. But like any good pitch, your petition helps you get crystal clear on what you’re asking for and why it matters. When your desire, your energy, and your intention all line up, that’s when magic starts to happen and doors open. So, next time you write a petition, don’t rush it. Treat it like your most important presentation: speak your truth, focus your energy, make your case… and then, release it with trust out into the universe so you can create real change.
