Purpose, Process, and Payoff

If you’ve ever attended one of my in-person workshops, you’ve heard about the sales concept of “purpose, process, and payoff,” although you may not have realized it at the time. At the beginning of the workshop, after I’ve introduced myself, I’ll say something along the lines of “So, we’re here today to talk about household magic and the way you can use average, non-magical things around your house in spellwork and ritual. We’ll spend the first half of the class talking about thinking magically and creatively with mundane objects, and then we’ll have an active brainstorming session where you’ll get to put on your witchy thinking hats and share ideas. It’s my hope that when you leave here today, you’ll have a brand-new perspective on ways to work magic with things that might never have seemed magical to you.” The first sentence is the purpose – it’s why we’re here. The second is how things are going to go, and the third is what you’ll get out of it: purpose, process, and payoff.
It’s a popular technique in the sales world, and it’s effective – and believe me, it’s just as effective in magic as it is in sales presentations. Think about it – what if your spellwork had a clearer structure? What if every ritual you performed followed a simple, powerful framework that kept your intention focused, your energy aligned, and your results easier to track? In the world of sales, clarity is everything. Before a salesperson can close a deal, they walk the client through three key elements:
- Purpose – Why this solution matters
- Process – How it will work
- Payoff – What the client will gain
This structure helps customers understand value, builds trust, and guides them to action. When we apply this framework to our spellwork, we create rituals that are clean, focused, and intentional. So let’s break it down and talk about how this classic sales strategy can transform your magical practice.
1: Purpose – Why Are You Casting This Spell? This is your why, and it matters more than you think. In sales, if the client doesn’t understand why a solution matters to them, they’ll hesitate. Likewise, if you don’t have clarity around your own intention, your spell can end up scattered or vague. Ask yourself: What am I trying to change or invite? Why does this matter to me right now? Is this intention in alignment with my values or current needs? Being honest about your “why” helps you cast from a place of grounded awareness—not desperation or confusion.
2: Process – What’s the Method You’re Using? In a sales conversation, this is the “how.” It’s where the rep walks the client through the steps of the solution, so they know what to expect. In magic, your process is the ritual, ingredients, timing, and structure. What form will this spell take? Does it involve a candle, jar, sigil, incantation, or something else? What tools, herbs, colors, or symbols will you use – and why? What are the steps you’ll take to raise energy and send it toward your goal? By clearly defining your process, you stay focused—and you also create a repeatable structure that you can refine over time.
3: Payoff – What Outcome Are You Hoping For? In sales, this is the benefit. It’s solving the customer’s problems, addressing their pain points. In magic, the payoff is what you’re manifesting… but it goes deeper than just “I want money” or “I want love.” A clear payoff connects to your emotions, lifestyle, and vision. It’s the “what happens after” part of your spell. Figure out in advance what success looks like for this working. How will you feel when this intention manifests? How will your daily life change? This gives your magic a destination.
Sample Spell Structure
Let’s say you want to do a spell for new career opportunities. Using the Purpose > Process > Payoff model:
- Purpose: “I want to find work that aligns with my creativity and pays me fairly.”
- Process: “I’ll do a candle spell on a Thursday night, using green candles for prosperity and abundance, dressed with cinnamon, mint, and basil.”
- Payoff: “I’ll land a job that excites me, lets me use my skills, and helps me feel confident, secure, and seen.”
Now your spell is more than a ritual, it’s actually a clearly structured energetic message.
Why does it work? Well, salespeople use Purpose, Process, and Payoff to simplify the path to yes. If you’re practicing witchcraft, you’re doing the same thing – you’re guiding energy toward a yes from the universe. This framework helps to clear out mental fog before you cast, create rituals that are easier to track and refine, and allows you to stay aligned with your why, how, and what’s next?
